This medium is engineered to create an environment with low oxidation-reduction potential, which is essential for the recovery and growth of obligate anaerobes. The Pancreatic Digest of Casein and Yeast Extract provide the necessary nitrogenous compounds, vitamins, and minerals. Glucose acts as the fermentable carbohydrate and energy source. Sodium Thioglycollate and L-Cystine serve as reducing agents that chemically remove oxygen from the medium. A small concentration of Bacteriological Agar is included to increase the viscosity, which helps to minimize the diffusion of atmospheric oxygen into the depths of the broth. Resazurin is included as a redox indicator, turning pink in the presence of oxygen and remaining colorless in the reduced (anaerobic) state.
Advantages
- ISO 7937 Compliance: Formulated to meet the strict requirements for the horizontal method of enumeration of Clostridium perfringens.
- Effective Confirmation: Recommended as the base medium for the motility-nitrate test and other confirmatory steps for Clostridium species.
- Dual Growth Support: Capable of supporting a wide range of microorganisms, from strict anaerobes in the lower portions to aerobes near the surface.
- Visual Integrity Check: The Resazurin indicator allows the user to easily verify the anaerobic status of the medium before use.
- High Recovery: The nutrient-rich formulation ensures the growth of even stressed or sublethally injured anaerobic cells.
