0937 Condalab

Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHI Agar) is an extremely nutritious general-purpose medium provided in convenient, ready-to-use Petri dishes. It is designed for the isolation and cultivation of a wide variety of fastidious microorganisms, including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as pathogenic fungi. This format is ideal for laboratories seeking to streamline their workflow without the need for manual weighing, sterilization, or pouring

Add to bag

BHI Agar is renowned for its rich formulation, which includes infusions from Calf Brains and Beef Heart. These animal tissue infusions, supplemented with Proteose Peptone, provide a complex array of nitrogen, vitamins, amino acids, and essential growth factors that are not available in simpler media. Glucose is the primary energy source for rapid microbial development. Sodium Chloride ensures osmotic stability, and Disodium Phosphate acts as a buffer to maintain a stable pH during the growth cycle. The solidifying agent is high-quality Bacteriological Agar. These plates are particularly effective for recovering demanding pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and various dimorphic fungi from clinical specimens.

Advantages

  • Ready-to-Use Convenience: Pre-poured plates eliminate preparation time, reduce the risk of contamination during pouring, and ensure batch-to-batch consistency.
  • High Nutritional Density: Supports the growth of the most fastidious microorganisms, ensuring high recovery rates from clinical and environmental samples.
  • Versatile Diagnostic Tool: Can be used for primary isolation, subculturing, or as a base for antibiotic sensitivity testing in specialized cases.
  • Superior Fungal Recovery: Provides the robust nutrients needed for the isolation of pathogenic fungi, including those that grow slowly.
  • Optimized Surface Area: The 90mm plate format is ideal for standard streaking techniques to achieve isolated colonies for further identification.

Instructions for use

The plates should be allowed to reach room temperature before inoculation. Inoculation: Streak the sample onto the surface of the agar using a sterile loop to obtain isolated colonies. Note: For the cultivation of fastidious bacteria, incubate the plates at 35 ± 2 °C for 18–48 hours. Depending on the target organism, an atmosphere enriched with 5–10% CO₂ or anaerobic conditions may be required. For fungal isolation, incubate at 25–30 °C for up to 7 days or longer. Examine the plates daily for growth.
