Bordetella Supplement is a selective antibiotic cocktail used for the isolation of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis. Designed to be used in conjunction with Bordet-Gengou or Regan-Lowe agar bases, this supplement inhibits the commensal flora of the respiratory tract, allowing for the successful recovery of the primary pathogens responsible for whooping cough.
Isolation of Bordetella species from nasopharyngeal swabs is often challenging due to their slow growth rate and the presence of rapidly growing upper respiratory tract flora. This supplement contains Cephalexin, a first-generation cephalosporin. Cephalexin is highly effective at suppressing most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria found in the nasopharynx, such as Staphylococcus species and various coliforms, while Bordetella species remain relatively resistant. By incorporating this selective agent, the overgrowth of background microflora is prevented, which is critical during the 3 to 7-day incubation period required for Bordetella.
Advantages
- High Selectivity: Specifically targeted to suppress the competing microflora of the human respiratory tract.
- Improved Recovery: Increases the diagnostic yield from clinical specimens by preventing the overgrowth of non-target organisms.
- Stability: Formulated as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder to ensure the long-term stability and potency of the antibiotic.
- Standardized Concentration: Each vial is precisely dosed for a specific volume of medium (500 mL), ensuring consistent selective pressure across batches.
- Essential for Clinical Diagnosis: A critical component in the gold-standard culture methods for pertussis monitoring and diagnosis.
