Mossel Broth, also known as Enterobacteriaceae Enrichment (EE) Broth, is a selective liquid medium used for the enrichment and detection of all members of the Enterobacteriaceae family in food, animal feed, and environmental samples.
Mossel Broth (NutriSelect® Basic) is formulated according to the original design by Mossel et al. It is particularly effective for the recovery of organisms that have been stressed or sublethally injured during food processing. The medium utilizes a combination of brilliant green and ox bile to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and most non-enteric Gram-negative bacteria. D-Glucose is included as the primary energy source, allowing for the rapid proliferation of Enterobacteriaceae. The presence of a strong buffering system (disodium hydrogen phosphate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate) ensures that the pH remains stable during the initial growth phase, promoting optimal recovery of target pathogens.
