2085 Condalab

Luria Agar with Ampicillin (Miller’s LB Agar) is a selective medium designed for the growth and maintenance of ampicillin-resistant strains of Escherichia coli used in molecular biology. This "Ready-to-use" dehydrated formulation includes the antibiotic pre-mixed into the base, ensuring consistent selection pressure without the need for manual antibiotic addition.

Add to bag

Luria Agar (Miller’s LB Agar) is a nutritionally rich medium containing Tryptone for amino acids and Yeast Extract for essential B-vitamins and trace elements. This specific version follows the Miller modification with a high Sodium Chloride (10.0 g/L) content to provide optimal osmotic conditions for many laboratory strains. The inclusion of Ampicillin at 100 µg/ml makes the medium selective, allowing only those bacteria carrying the bla (beta-lactamase) gene—typically found on plasmids like pBR322 or pUC—to survive and form colonies.

Advantages

  • Ready-to-use Selection: Pre-supplemented with Ampicillin (100 µg/ml) to eliminate the risk of errors during manual antibiotic weighing and addition.
  • Optimized for Cloning: Ideal for the selection of transformed E. coli cells during cloning experiments and plasmid DNA production.
  • Miller Formulation: The 10 g/L salt concentration is preferred for high-density growth and improved plasmid stability in many host strains.
  • Convenience & Safety: Minimizes handling of concentrated antibiotic powders, improving lab safety and ensuring a homogeneous distribution within the agar.
  • Nutrient Rich: Supports rapid growth and distinct colony morphology for easy screening and picking.
