VRBGL Agar is a hybrid formulation that incorporates both Lactose and Glucose. The inclusion of Glucose ensures the recovery of all members of the Enterobacteriaceae family (including non-lactose fermenters like Salmonella and Shigella), while Lactose allows for the traditional identification of coliforms. The Peptone Mixture and Yeast Extract provide essential nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals. Selectivity is maintained by Bile Salts No. 3 and Crystal Violet, which inhibit Gram-positive bacteria. The Neutral Red indicator detects acid production from the fermentation of either sugar, resulting in purplish-red colonies. These colonies are often surrounded by a halo of precipitated bile salts, a characteristic visual marker for enteric group activity.
Advantages
- Dual-Sugar Versatility: Capable of detecting the entire Enterobacteriaceae group while still providing the classic reactions for coliform bacteria.
- High Selectivity: Effectively suppresses Gram-positive flora, ensuring that only the target Gram-negative organisms proliferate.
- Enhanced Recovery: The combination of sugars supports the growth of a wider variety of enteric species compared to single-sugar media.
- Clear Differentiation: Deep red or purple colonies with bile precipitation halos allow for easy visual identification and enumeration.
- Efficient Hygiene Monitoring: An excellent tool for general hygiene screening in food production facilities where a broad "total enteric" count is required.
