Endo LES Agar Base is a modification of the original Endo Agar, specifically optimized for the membrane filter method. It provides a rich nutrient environment to support the recovery of coliforms that may be stressed by water treatment processes. The medium contains a combination of Peptones (Casein, Meat, and Heart) and Yeast Extract, which offer a broad spectrum of nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals. Selectivity is achieved through Sodium Desoxycholate and the Sodium Sulfite-Basic Fuchsin complex, which inhibit the growth of Gram-positive organisms. Lactose serves as the fermentable carbohydrate. When coliforms ferment lactose, they produce aldehydes that react with the fuchsin-sulfite indicator, turning the colonies red. Escherichia coli produces a particularly intense reaction, forming dark red colonies with a distinctive green metallic sheen.
Advantages
- Optimized for Membrane Filtration: Formulated to provide maximum recovery and visibility of colonies grown on filter membranes.
- High Sensitivity: Capable of detecting low concentrations of coliforms in large volumes of filtered water.
- Distinctive Morphology: The characteristic green metallic sheen of E. coli allows for rapid and reliable presumptive identification.
- Standardized Monitoring: Complies with international methods for the testing of drinking water and environmental sources.
- Enhanced Recovery: The multifaceted peptone mix helps revive stressed cells more efficiently than simpler formulations.
