MRS Agar, named after de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe, is a non-selective medium with a formulation optimized to support the growth of fastidious lactobacilli, such as Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus fermentum. The medium contains a rich nutrient base including universal peptone, meat extract, and yeast extract. Selectivity is achieved through a low pH and the addition of sodium acetate and triammonium citrate, which inhibit the growth of many competing microorganisms. Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), magnesium, and manganese act as specific growth factors for lactobacilli.
Advantages
- Highly nutritious formulation that supports even poor-growing strains of lactic acid bacteria.
- Optimized for the enumeration of lactobacilli in regulated food and beverage quality control.
- NutriSelect® Basic quality grade provides cost-efficient powdered media for routine microbiology.
- Consistent growth promotion results according to industry standards.
