The key feature of this medium is the addition of Lecithin and Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80). Lecithin acts as a neutralizer for quaternary ammonium compounds, while Polysorbate 80 neutralizes phenols, hexachlorophene, formalin, and, in combination with lecithin, ethanol. This makes the medium essential for "Microbial Content Tests" where the presence of disinfectant or preservative residues might otherwise cause false-negative results by inhibiting viable cells.
