Originally formulated by Zobell, Marine Broth provides the specific minerals and nutrients required by microorganisms that inhabit marine environments. It contains Bacteriological Peptone and Yeast Extract as primary sources of nitrogen, amino acids, and B-complex vitamins. The core of the medium is its complex mineral profile, which includes Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, Sodium Sulfate, and Calcium Chloride. These salts maintain the high osmotic pressure and ionic strength required by halophilic marine bacteria for cell wall stability and metabolic enzyme function. Trace elements such as Strontium, Boron, and Fluoride are also included to mirror the trace composition of the ocean, ensuring the growth of even the most demanding marine species.
Advantages
- Oceanic Simulation: Perfectly balanced to support species that cannot grow on standard, low-salt laboratory broths.
- High Recovery Rates: Ideal for the enrichment of marine microbes from seawater, sediments, and the surfaces of marine organisms.
- Research Standard: Used globally for studying the physiology and metabolic products of heterotrophic marine bacteria.
- Enrichment Base: Acts as an excellent liquid base for the initial stages of isolation or for the large-scale cultivation of marine biomass.
- Enhanced Stability: The phosphate and bicarbonate buffering system helps maintain a stable alkaline pH, typical of marine habitats.
