This medium is designed to selectively recover members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, even when they are present in small numbers or in a sublethally injured state. The Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin provides essential nitrogen, amino acids, and peptides for growth. Glucose (Dextrose) acts as the fermentable carbohydrate and primary energy source. Selectivity is achieved through the inclusion of Ox Bile (Brilliant Green Bile), which inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, and Brilliant Green, which further suppresses competitive flora. The medium also features a strong buffering system with Disodium Phosphate and Monopotassium Phosphate to maintain an optimal pH, preventing the rapid accumulation of acid from glucose fermentation which could otherwise inhibit the target organisms.
