2668000 Ammonia Reagent Set, 0.01-0.50 mg/L NH₃-N

Ammonia Reagent Set measures ammonia nitrogen 0.01-0.50 mg/L NH₃-N in water, wastewater and seawater. Article 2668000 uses Salicylate method (8155). Each product package can be used to conduct evaluation of 100 samples. Ammonia Reagent Set may be measured using all Hach spectrophotometers except DR820, DR2000, DR3000 and DR4000. Article 2668000 can be used for 10 mL sample analysis.

Ammonia Reagent Set includes:

• Ammonia Salicylate Reagent Powder Pillows (p/n 2653299)

Before starting analysis:

• It is recommended to collect the sample using clean glass or plastic bottles. 
• It is required to keep cyanide solutions at pH>11 to prevent exposure to hydrogen cyanide gas.
• It is necessary to store the sample sealed to prevent ammonia contamination from the air. 

Procedure for NH₃-N measurement

Start program 385 N, Ammonia, Salic. Pour 10mL of deionized water in the cell to prepare the blank. Fill the another cell with 10mL sample to prepare the sample. Add the content of Ammonia Salicylate Reagent Powder Pillow to each cell. Set the stopper on the sample cell, stir the sample cell content and after 3 minutes, pour the Ammonia Cyanurate Reagent Powder Pillow to each cell. Install the stopper, shake the sample cell and start the instrument timer for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, thoroughly clean and evaluate the blank cell in the spectrophotometer or colorimeter. Insert the pretreated sample cell in the instrument and press READ.

Summary of method

Ammonia compounds combine with chlorine forming monochloramine that enters into reaction with salicylate. The resulting 5-aminosalicylate is oxidized in the presence of sodium nitroprusside catalyst forming blue color compound masked by the yellow color from the excess reagent to give green color solution.

Sample preparation

It is recommended to adjust the sample pH using concentrated sulfuric acid to pH<2 for the water, wastewater or seawater sample preservation. It is required to store the pretreated sample at the temperature or below 6 °C (43 °F) for a maximum of 28 days.
