Free and Total Chlorine Reagent Set measures free and total chlorine in water, wastewater and seawater by Ferrous Ethylenediammonium Sulfate Digital Titration, using DPD indicator.
Article 2445300 measures free and total chlorine in the range of 0-3.00 mg/L Cl₂ in water, wastewater and seawater. Free and Total Chlorine Reagent Set uses DPD-FEAS method. Each package of the product can be used to conduct 40-100 tests.
Free and Total Chlorine Reagent Set includes:
- Free Chlorine Reagent Powder Pillows (p/n 1407099)
- Total Chlorine Reagent Powder Pillows (p/n 1406499)
- FEAS Titration Cartridge, 0.00564 N (p/n 2292301)
Before starting analysis:
- It is required to collect samples in clean glass containers.
- It is recommended to pretreat glass sample containers to remove chlorine demand.
- It is necessary to analyze the sample immediately after collection.
Procedure for Cl (total or free) measurement
In order to evaluate free or total chlorine, insert clean delivery tube into the digital titration cartridge and attach the cartridge to the Digital Titrator. Turn the delivery knob to eject air and several drops of titrant. Pipet 25mL of the water, wastewater or seawater sample in the 50mL Erlenmeyer flask. Depending on the parameter of your interest pour the content of DPD Free Chlorine Powder Pillow or DPD Total Chlorine Powder Pillow and swirl to mix. If determining Cl total - wait for 3 minutes, for Cl free go to the naxt step without waiting. Add titrant until the color changes to colorless and calculate the concentration:
- Digits used × 0.01 = mg/L free chlorine as Cl2.
- Digits used × 0.01 = mg/L total chlorine as Cl2.
Summary of method
The DPD-FEAS method is a titrimetric procedure used to determine free available chlorine in the sample and estimate free and combined chlorine fractions that are in the sample together. The magenta species that is a result of the oxidation of DPD by chlorine is quantitatively removed by titration with ferrous ethylenediammonium sulfate. The volume of titrant that is required to get to a colorless endpoint is proportional to the chlorine concentration. In addition, total residual chlorine can be determined with this test.
