Article 2444800 measures high range total chlorine in the range between 2000 and 70000 mg/L Cl₂ in water, wastewater and seawater. The product uses Iodometric Titration method (8209). Total Chlorine Reagent Set can be used for 100 tests.

Total Chlorine Reagent Set includes:

Before you start take into account the following:

  • It is required to collect the sample in glass containers pretreated with weak bleach solution and rinsed with deionized or distilled water.
  • It is recommended to collect a representative sample to receive precise testing results.
  • Reactant concentrations, sunlight, pH, temperature and salinity affect the decomposition of chlorine in the water.

Procedure for Cl₂ determination

Select the sample volume, choose the titration cartridge and attach the cartridge to the Digital Titrator. Fill 125-mL Erlenmeyer flask with the sample, add Dissolved Oxygen 3 Powder Pillow and swirl to mix. Pour the content of the Potassium Iodide Powder Pillow and swirl the flask. Continue adding titrant until the color changes to pale yellow. Pipet 1 full dropper of Starch Indicator Solution and swirl the content of the Erlenmeyer flask. Add titrant until the color changes from dark blue to colorless and calculate the concentration.

Summary of method

Total chlorine concentration is equal to the concentration of the free and the combined forms of chlorine. Free chlorine enters into reaction with ammonia forming combined chlorine such as monochloramines. Potassium iodide releases free iodine in direct proportion to the amount of total chlorine in the sample in the presence of chlorine at an acidic pH. Iodine is titrated with sodium thiosulfate to a colorless endpoint.
