Agar Base Aeromonas (RYAN), also known as Aeromonas Medium Base, is formulated based on the modification by Ryan. It is designed to suppress the growth of most Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas, and Gram-positive bacteria, while allowing Aeromonas to thrive. The medium contains Acid Digest of Casein and Yeast Extract as primary nitrogen and vitamin sources. Sorbitol and Inositol are included for differentiation through fermentation. The selectivity is achieved through the addition of Ampicillin (as a supplement), which inhibits many competing organisms. Bromothymol Blue and Thymol Blue serve as pH indicators, causing Aeromonas colonies to typically appear dark green with a darker center as they acidify the medium.
Advantages
- Highly Selective: Effectively suppresses background flora in complex samples like wastewater or clinical specimens.
- Clear Differentiation: Distinct color changes in the colonies allow for easy presumptive identification of Aeromonas.
- Optimized Formulation: Ryan's modification improves the recovery and visibility of colonies compared to earlier formulations.
- Versatile Application: Widely used in environmental microbiology, veterinary diagnostics, and food safety testing.
- Consistent Performance: Produced under strict quality control to ensure batch-to-batch reproducibility.
